Paramount-Skydance merger approved

The FCC has approved the $8 billion merger of Paramount Global and Skydance Media, setting the stage for an expanded slate of film and television content reaching European markets, including Belgium.

The FCC approved the merger following lengthy talks that began last year. Paramount Global—parent of CBS, MTV and Paramount Pictures—will join forces with Skydance Media, the studio behind Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and Top Gun: Maverick. Rival bids, including a $26 billion offer from Apollo and Sony, were considered and ultimately set aside before negotiations resumed in June 2024.

Under the terms of the deal, Skydance will phase out its diversity, equity and inclusion targets and install an independent ombudsman for two years to address bias complaints at CBS. Observers expect the combined group to bolster its production pipeline and distribution reach, potentially creating fresh opportunities for Belgian broadcasters and streaming platforms to licence high‑profile content.

This consolidation underscores Hollywood’s drive for scale in the streaming era. For Belgian viewers, the merger may translate into quicker access to marquee films and series—and could reshape local licensing dynamics.
