Smile Sail, the tech fund led by serial entrepreneur Urbain Vandeurzen, has acquired a majority stake in Twikey, a Ghent-based payment orchestration scaleup.
This marks Smile Sail’s first Belgian investment, following prior deals in Dutch firms like Reglab and Rsult.
Twikey’s founders, Dominique Adriansens and Koen Serry, are reinvesting alongside the new shareholder to fuel European expansion and AI-driven fraud prevention.
Twikey’s platform processes 29 billion euros annually in recurring payments for 2,000+ clients, including NPO (Dutch Public Broadcasting) and Q8, with a 99 percent success rate.
The company tackles a critical pain point: failed payments – which cost businesses 3–10 percent of revenue – by instantly rerouting transactions and offering alternative payment methods. "Companies lose millions yearly to fraud and failed collections", says Adriansens. "Open Banking and AI let us fight this proactively."
With 3,500+ bank and payment provider connections, Twikey simplifies cross-border transactions, helping businesses avoid administrative burdens and cash-flow disruptions.
The new funding will accelerate growth in Germany, Scandinavia, and the UK, while expanding risk management and AI capabilities. "We’re building the go-to platform for recurring payments in Europe’s fragmented market", Adriansens adds.
Nico Bogaerts, Partner at Smile Sail, highlights Twikey’s scalability: "Their orchestration layer cuts unpaid invoices, speeds up payments, and uses AI to prevent fraud. We’re backing them with capital, software expertise, and our network to drive European expansion."
Twikey’s 2025 revenue surge underscores its momentum, now poised to conquer new markets with Smile Sail’s support.
