Renewi, the British waste management and recycling company with a strong presence in the Benelux, has agreed to be acquired by a consortium led by Australian investment firm Macquarie and Canadian fund BCI.
The deal, valued at nearly 850 million euros, follows an extended negotiation period and a thorough financial review.
The consortium, operating under the name Earth Bidco, has made a formal offer of 870 pence per share, representing a 57 percent premium compared to Renewi’s stock price before acquisition rumors emerged in late November. The transaction values Renewi at approximately 850 million euros.
Strategic investment in recycling
Renewi, formed in 2017 through the merger of the Shanks Group and Van Gansewinkel, is a major player in waste processing and recycling. Chairman Ben Verwaayen emphasized that the acquisition not only delivers significant value to shareholders but also supports Renewi’s long-term strategy. The company believes Macquarie and BCI will act as responsible investors, helping to build on Renewi’s existing success.
Despite the change in ownership, Renewi has reassured employees and customers that its operations will remain unaffected in the short term. The transaction still requires shareholder approval before it can be finalized.
With this acquisition, Macquarie strengthens its position in the European waste management sector, while Renewi gains financial backing to continue its growth and sustainability initiatives.
