Brussels-based Prothya Biosolutions, a key producer of plasma-derived medicines, will be acquired by India’s Intas Pharmaceuticals to expand its global plasma footprint.
Indian pharmaceutical group Intas Pharmaceuticals is taking over Prothya Biosolutions, a Brussels-headquartered bio-pharma company specialising in extracting life-saving proteins from donor blood plasma. Prothya, once part of the Belgian Red Cross, employs 1,200 people across Belgium, the Netherlands, Hungary, and Finland.
Its Belgian site in Neder-over-Heembeek processes 1.8 million litres of plasma annually into intermediate products used for treatments such as haemophilia, immune deficiencies, and burn care. These are further refined in the Netherlands or by other pharmaceutical firms.
The global plasma derivatives market is worth over USD 30 billion and dominated by players like Takeda, CSL, Grifols, and Octapharma. Intas, active in plasma processing in India and operating internationally under the Accord Healthcare brand, says the deal will create a “global platform for critical therapies.”
Prothya has faced financial headwinds, reporting a €58.4 million loss in 2024 after €42.4 million in 2023, largely due to its Dutch operations. The company was formed through a merger of Belgian and Dutch plasma processing units and acquired in 2021 by a Fortissimo Capital-led investor consortium.
For Intas, with estimated revenues of USD 3.3 billion, the acquisition strengthens its position in plasma-based therapies. The privately held group, backed by Temasek and ChrysCapital, has been expanding in Europe and the US despite past FDA compliance issues. Prothya will be integrated into Accord’s plasma division.
