Belgian digital health startup Cavell has raised 1.5 million euros in a pre-seed funding round to scale its AI-driven medical documentation platform across Belgium and Europe. Backed by a group of strategic investors, the Gent-based company aims to reduce administrative burdens in healthcare and shift the focus back to patient care.
Founded just a year ago by Anthony Rathé, Pieter Olivier (a neurologist at AZ Sint-Lucas), and Louis Verdonckt, Cavell addresses one of healthcare’s most persistent inefficiencies: excessive admin and poor data capture. The software listens during consultations, surgeries, or ward rounds and automatically generates structured, coded medical reports directly into the patient record—saving doctors time and improving clinical documentation quality.
The technology is already being used in hospitals and GP practices. "Thanks to Cavell, I can fully focus on the patient", says Dr. Pieter Vanderschaeve of Medined. "It saves time and improves both patient interaction and the quality of my medical notes."
AZ Sint-Lucas, one of Cavell’s early supporters, highlights its bottom-up innovation. “This is a prime example of impactful innovation emerging from clinical practice”, says CEO Thierry Freyne.
The capital will be used to strengthen Cavell’s product, expand integration capabilities, and support its international rollout. The founders aim to position Cavell as the go-to standard for capturing and structuring medical data across all clinical environments.
“We're not just building a tool”, says Rathé. “We’re building technology that actually works for healthcare professionals – robust, seamless, and scalable.”
For M&A and PE professionals, Cavell’s early traction and rapid uptake in both primary and secondary care settings mark it as a high-potential target in the European digital health space, particularly as healthcare systems intensify their push toward efficiency and interoperability.
