The financing - meant to advance breakthrough depression therapy - marks a major milestone for Wallonia’s growing role in mental health innovation.

Franco-Belgian biotech startup Elkedonia, a spinout from startup studio Argobio, has secured an oversubscribed 11.25 million euros seed funding round to develop first-in-class neuroplastogen therapeutics for treatment-resistant depression and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Backed by a syndicate of top-tier European investors, including WE Life Sciences (Wallonia), Kurma Partners, and Sambrinvest (Charleroi), Elkedonia aims to introduce fast-acting, non-addictive antidepressants based on groundbreaking research from Sorbonne University.

The company operates from its headquarters in Strasbourg, France, with a strategic affiliate located in Charleroi, Belgium, underscoring its cross-border R&D footprint.

Elkedonia’s lead program targets Elk1, an intracellular protein implicated in neuroplasticity and reward pathways. Unlike ketamine or psychedelics, Elkedonia’s compounds are non-hallucinogenic and non-sedative, offering a potentially safer and more scalable alternative for treating major depressive disorder (MDD), PTSD, and addiction.

"This innovation represents a major leap forward in mental health treatment, and we're proud that Wallonia is playing a pivotal role in its development", says Valentin Tonnel, Investment Director at WE Life Sciences, a key regional backer focused on building Wallonia’s life sciences ecosystem.

Delphine Charvin, formerly Operating Partner at Argobio, now leads Elkedonia as CEO. She emphasizes the company’s precision medicine strategy, including the development of biomarkers for better patient targeting and treatment monitoring.

With part of the proceeds allocated to R&D activities in Belgium, and regional investor Sambrinvest also on board, Charleroi is emerging as a key node in Elkedonia’s mission to tackle the unmet needs of 100 million patients in Europe and the U.S. suffering from MDD.

This seed round strengthens Belgium’s reputation as a life sciences hub and reinforces Wallonia’s role as a magnet for cutting-edge neurotherapeutic innovation.

For Belgian M&A, venture capital, and private equity professionals, Elkedonia’s seed round demonstrates the increasing attractiveness of Wallonia’s biotech ecosystem for European cross-border investments in mental health innovation.
