Paris-based EssilorLuxottica has agreed to acquire Belgium’s Automation & Robotics, strengthening its automation and digital control of optical-lens manufacturing to boost quality, efficiency and service across its global production network.
Founded in 1983 in Belgium, Automation & Robotics specialises in automated optical metrology systems, serving mass producers and prescription labs. The acquisition bolsters EssilorLuxottica’s production automation and digitalisation, aiming to enhance quality control and efficiency across its lens manufacturing network.
Francesco Milleri, Chairman and CEO, describes the deal as “a milestone” in setting new standards of excellence, while Deputy CEO Paul du Saillant adds that combining A&R’s expertise with EssilorLuxottica’s industrial platform will support evolving ophthalmic manufacturing needs, including emerging wearable categories.
The takeover builds on EssilorLuxottica’s strategic focus on vertical integration, reinforcing its control over key production stages. For the Belgian optics sector, the deal underlines the global appeal of local innovation and may drive further investment in domestic R&D. A&R’s workforce and operations in Belgium will remain in place, ensuring continuity for customers and partners.
With over €26.5 billion in revenue in 2024 and a network of 18,000 retail outlets worldwide, EssilorLuxottica now adds A&R’s automation solutions to its lens portfolio, which already includes Varilux, Stellest and Transitions technologies.
