DPG Media sells Berlingske Media to Amedia

The Norwegian media group Amedia has completed the acquisition of Berlingske Media from DPG Media.

Berlingske Media, a prominent Danish media group, includes well-known brands such as Berlingske, B.T., Weekendavisen, and Euroinvestor. Since 2015, Berlingske Media has been part of DPG Media.

Amedia, Norway’s largest publisher of editorial media, views this acquisition as a strategic opportunity to enhance its presence in the Northern European media market.

Strengthening media collaboration in Scandinavia
Anders Opdahl, CEO of Amedia, highlighted the importance of this acquisition: "Scandinavian media companies face increasing global competition and profound digital transformations, competing with tech giants for revenue and distribution. In this challenging landscape, fulfilling the mission of news media – promoting a vibrant democracy through free expression and independent journalism – is becoming increasingly difficult. This is why I believe closer collaboration is essential for the future, making Amedia and Berlingske Media a perfect match."

Opdahl further emphasizes: "We see significant opportunities for cross-border knowledge sharing and synergies. This agreement enables us to export our expertise as a pioneer in digital newspaper development. It strengthens our position while allowing us to reach new audiences and ensure the sustainability of Berlingske Media in Denmark."

A strategic move for DPG Media
Christian Van Thillo, Executive Chairman of DPG Media, also reflects on the transaction: "The digital transformation of Berlingske Media’s titles has been a great success so far. However, like all publishers, the company needs greater scale to accelerate its development in a challenging market. Therefore, we explored potential consolidation opportunities and held discussions with several major publishers. It became clear that Amedia shared the need for consolidation and had a clear ambition to expand its reach in the Scandinavian countries. After careful consideration, we concluded that Amedia, as a highly successful and digitally focused publisher, would be an excellent owner for Berlingske Media. This ultimately led to the transaction."

"While selling such exceptional titles is a difficult and uncommon decision for our company, we are confident that Berlingske Media is in the best possible hands”, adds Van Thillo. “That is what truly matters for its future development. We would like to thank our colleagues at Berlingske Media for ten fantastic years and wish them all the best for the future."

A new chapter for Berlingske Media
This acquisition marks the beginning of a new chapter for Berlingske Media, as it becomes part of a media group with a strong digital focus and a commitment to fostering collaboration in the Scandinavian media market.
