Belgian media group strengthens position as leading player in the Benelux.
DPG Media has officially completed its acquisition of RTL Nederland, following approval from the Dutch competition authority, the Autoriteit Consument & Markt (ACM).
The 1.1 billion euros deal, initially announced in 2023, will take effect on 1 July, marking a major expansion of the Belgian company’s presence in the Dutch media market.
With this acquisition, DPG Media – already Belgium’s largest media company – consolidates its role as the dominant media player across both Belgium and the Netherlands.
RTL Nederland’s portfolio includes major television channels such as RTL 4, RTL 5, and the popular streaming platform Videoland, which now become part of the DPG Media group.
DPG Media already owns a broad range of influential media brands, including Belgian and Dutch news titles like HLN, AD, de Volkskrant, Trouw, and Het Parool, as well as NU.nl, various magazines, and radio stations. The addition of RTL’s television and streaming services gives the Belgian company a powerful cross-media reach in both countries.
To safeguard editorial independence and media plurality, DPG Media and the ACM have agreed on specific conditions. These include maintaining separate editorial teams for RTL Nieuws and NU.nl, and the creation of independent oversight foundations to ensure transparency and journalistic integrity.
All existing RTL editorial teams and television channels will remain in place, and DPG Media has confirmed that editorial charters across its brands will be updated to reflect the new structure.
This acquisition not only solidifies DPG Media’s leadership in the region but also marks a new chapter in Belgian media influence in the Dutch market.
