Belgian media giant DPG Media is expanding its streaming footprint in the Low Countries with the 142 million euros acquisition of Viaplay’s Dutch operations.
The move strengthens Videoland, DPG Media’s Dutch streaming platform, transforming it from a hub for local entertainment into a comprehensive destination for both premium content and live sports.
Videoland adds live sports to its portfolio
The acquisition brings live sports rights – including Formula 1, English Premier League football, and PDC Darts – to Videoland, fulfilling a long-standing ambition to become Netherlands’ most relevant streaming service.
Ellen van den Berghe, Director of Streaming at DPG Media, states: “Sports viewing is deeply rooted in Dutch culture, and this shift to streaming aligns with our goal to build a future-proof platform that competes with global players.”
Seamless integration for Viaplay subscribers
The 50 employees of Viaplay Netherlands will transition to DPG Media, ensuring continuity for existing subscribers, who will retain access to their current plans and the familiar app. The integration of Viaplay’s sports rights and programming into Videoland will be executed carefully, expanding the platform’s appeal to families and sports enthusiasts alike.
A strategic move to compete globally
This acquisition positions Videoland as a major contender in the Dutch streaming market, combining local entertainment with international sports.
DPG Media’s investment underscores its commitment to creating a holistic streaming experience, catering to diverse audience preferences while rivaling international giants. The deal remains subject to customary regulatory approvals.
