Delhaize completes acquisition of Delfood, expanding convenience footprint

Belgian supermarket chain Delhaize has completed the acquisition of Delfood, including all louis delhaize-branded stores, affiliated partner shops, logistics operations, and the company’s Belgian headquarters.

The transaction, which received approval from the Belgian Competition Authority, strengthens Delhaize’s position in the domestic food retail market, particularly in the convenience segment.

The deal covers 303 stores operated or supplied by Delfood and brings Delhaize’s total network to 1,109 locations across Belgium and Luxembourg.

Delfood, formerly part of the LDz Group, will remain a separate legal entity within Delhaize, while the louis delhaize brand will continue to operate. Its logistics activities and headquarters will also remain in place to coordinate ongoing operations.

Delhaize CEO Alexandros Boussis said the acquisition will allow the retailer to further differentiate itself in convenience retail while supporting the growth potential of louis delhaize stores and independent partners. He also noted the symbolic nature of the transaction, which reunites two companies sharing the same founding family after more than 150 years.

Olivier André, CEO of the LDz Group, described the deal as a new chapter for Delfood’s employees, partners, and customers, thanking teams and suppliers for building the business in a challenging market environment.

Founded more than 150 years ago, Delfood operates convenience-focused food retail formats of less than 400 square meters and employs 217 people across its stores, warehouse, and support services.
