Danish home furnishings chain Jysk is significantly expanding its presence in Belgium with the addition of 16 new stores. The company will take over nine outlets from Leen Bakker and open seven more in former Shopping Cora locations.
Since opening its first Belgian stores in 2017, Jysk has grown to 70 locations and now aims to reach 125 across the country in the coming years.
The acquisition provides a partial solution for the struggling Dutch retailer Leen Bakker, which has been seeking buyers for its 44 Belgian stores after entering court protection from creditors earlier this year.
Jysk will take over Leen Bakker branches in Bruges, Dendermonde, Huy, Kuurne, Liège, Marche-en-Famenne, and Zottegem, along with two additional, undisclosed locations.
The first of the newly acquired stores are expected to reopen in early 2026, and Jysk has announced it will retain at least half of the current Leen Bakker employees.
Leen Bakker’s court-appointed administrators continue to search for buyers for the remaining stores, with a final decision due by December 7.
