Two heritage brands unite with a vision for the future…
Brewery Huyghe, known for its premium beer portfolio including iconic brands like Delirium and Averbode, has announced the acquisition of the historic Het Anker brewery.
This strategic move unites two longstanding Belgian breweries, blending their rich traditions and strengths to unlock significant growth potential.
Brewery Huyghe, which achieved a revenue of over 45 million euros in 2023 – 83 percent of which came from exports to over 100 countries – has invested heavily in sustainability, aiming for full carbon neutrality by 2035. With a focus on international expansion, the brewery sees the acquisition as an opportunity to extend Het Anker's reach globally while preserving its distinct identity.
Founded in the 15th century and rooted in the medieval city of Mechelen, Het Anker boasts a diverse portfolio of 17 beers, including the internationally acclaimed Gouden Carolus, alongside La Cambre, Maneblusser, and a leading range of Belgian whiskies. Het Anker’s 2023 revenue of 20 million euros reflects its innovative approach, which combines beer and whisky production with niche products like fruit syrups and a unique hospitality concept featuring brewery tours, events, and a hotel.
Through this acquisition, Brewery Huyghe aims to amplify Het Anker's local strength while introducing its products to a global audience. The partnership also promises a diversified offering to appeal to both traditional and modern beer enthusiasts. Furthermore, Brewery Huyghe plans to integrate its advanced sustainability practices into Het Anker’s operations, ensuring long-term growth and environmental responsibility.
BNP Paribas Fortis Private Equity joined as a minority shareholder of Het Anker in 2016 with the aim of supporting the brewery's expansion plans and establishing a solid foundation for sustainable growth. In the following years, Het Anker significantly increased its market share both nationally and internationally.
