Belgian government to sell 20 percent of Belfius Bank

post-title

The Belgian government intends to sell 20 percent of Belfius Bank’s shares. As a result, Belfius will soon shift from being fully publicly owned to having a partially privatized status.

The sale is expected to generate around 2 billion euros for the current federal government.

Belfius was created in 2011 after the dismantling of the former Dexia Group, which ran into trouble during the financial crisis.

The Belgian state purchased the bank at the time for 4 billion euros. An attempt to list Belfius on the stock exchange came to nothing in 2018.
