Belgian digital identity platform Itsme has acquired iDIN, a Dutch digital identification and login service, in a cross-border transaction between two bank-backed fintech initiatives.
iDIN, based in Amsterdam, was developed by Currence, the cooperative organisation of major Dutch banks. The service is currently used by approximately 300 websites and is accessible to around 13 million Dutch consumers.
Under the transaction, iDIN will be gradually integrated into the Itsme platform, with full migration planned by 2028. From June next year, iDIN users will be able to log in to participating organisations using either iDIN or the Itsme app.
Itsme was founded by leading Belgian banks including KBC, Belfius and ING Belgium. The platform is recognised at European level and is active in 29 European countries, serving around 1,200 corporate clients. In Belgium, Itsme is also used for access to government services, a role fulfilled in the Netherlands by DigiD.
According to Itsme, the acquisition will not compromise security standards. Financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed.
The deal follows a broader trend of consolidation in European payments and identity infrastructure. In 2023, Dutch online payments system iDEAL was acquired by the European Payments Initiative (EPI).
