Axelera AI seeks €150M in fresh funding

Dutch AI chipmaker Axelera AI is in talks with investors to raise over €150 million for further product development.

Eindhoven-based start-up Axelera AI is negotiating with investors to secure more than €150 million in additional financing, according to Bloomberg sources. The funds would support the development of a new generation of computer chips tailored for artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

Founded in 2021, Axelera AI designs chips powerful enough to run advanced AI models, particularly for applications such as surveillance cameras, robotics, and edge computing. While the company declined to confirm the exact funding target, it acknowledged that discussions with investors are ongoing.

The company, headquartered at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, has already raised more than $200 million to date. Earlier this year, Axelera AI was awarded nearly €62 million in subsidies from EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, a Luxembourg-based public-private partnership focused on strengthening Europe’s supercomputing capabilities.

Belgium has played an important role in Axelera AI’s financing journey. Early-stage backers include Imec.xpand, the innovation-focused venture fund linked to Leuven-based research center Imec, and the Belgian Federal Holding and Investment Company (SFPIM).

The additional funding would reinforce Axelera AI’s position in the fast-growing European semiconductor and AI markets, sectors seen as strategic priorities for both innovation and sovereignty.
