Ahold Delhaize expands with acquisition of 325 Louis Delhaize stores in Belgium.

Ahold Delhaize has announced the acquisition of 325 Louis Delhaize supermarkets in Belgium, a move that significantly boosts its presence in the country.

This purchase includes the logistics and headquarters of Delfood, the subsidiary operating the Louis Delhaize stores. Pending approval by Belgian competition authorities, the deal is expected to close by year-end. The Louis Delhaize brand will remain, with the stores focusing on smaller, convenience-oriented formats.

Ahold Delhaize currently operates over 800 Delhaize stores and around 80 Albert Heijn locations in Belgium. The acquisition will increase its total store count to over 1,000, enhancing its market share and providing better leverage in supplier negotiations.

The move follows Ahold Delhaize's broader acquisition strategy, which recently included the purchase of Romania’s Profi chain.

The acquisition marks a reunion of sorts, as the founders of Delhaize and Louis Delhaize were brothers, though their businesses operated independently for 150 years.
