Banyan Software has acquired medical software developer, Besco, to accelerate the international rollout of its hospital tracking and billing platforms.
By joining Banyan’s expanding portfolio in the Benelux and its global network of healthcare software providers, the Besco team gains direct access to international peers as well as deep shared expertise in product development and AI.
Founded in 2002 by Jos Bessemans in Alken, Limburg, Besco develops specialised medical software, including its implant notification system and eCo database suite – which manages healthcare nomenclatures, reimbursement tariffs, data, etc. on more than 250,000 domestic and foreign pharmaceuticals.
“My family built Besco over more than twenty years into something Belgian hospitals and insurers depend on every day,” shares CEO Bert Lantin. “Ten years ago, Jos and Marie-Rose passed the torch to me, and Besco is ready for its next chapter.”
Besco’s flagship instrument-tracking platform, SteMaTo, provides real-time tracking for central sterilisation departments across Belgian hospitals, as well as international client sites in Canada, Mexico and Romania, and aboard Mercy Ships hospital vessels.
Banyan Software’s M&A lead for the Benelux, Jos Gritter, points out: “Belgian hospitals and insurers trust Besco to get reimbursement right, one regulation at a time, and that trust took decades to earn. A position like that is rare and hard to replicate.”
Under the terms of the acquisition, Besco joins Banyan’s portfolio of over 100 specialised vertical software companies, aligned with its "buy-and-hold-for-life" investment philosophy.
Banyan director of corporate development Benelux, Guy Wijnen, adds:

are given a permanent home and the means to grow internationally,
without changing what works.”
Bert notes that, for this next phase, the company needed a partner who would protect what the family built and take its products to more people worldwide, carrying that legacy forward. “Banyan’s permanent home approach and its commitment to keeping our team in place made clear that we found the right partner for the long term,” he says.
The investment will go towards strengthening Besco’s Portal for the long term (including support for Belgium’s upcoming nomenclature reform) and helping SteMaTo to reach more hospitals globally. “With the support of Banyan, we can invest in our software faster and further expand our international position in the digitalisation of sterilisation and nomenclature processes,” Bert explains.
With Banyan’s backing, Besco is positioned to diagnose new international market opportunities while improving its potential as a digital partner for Belgian hospitals, pharmacies and healthcare providers. “Next year we celebrate our 25th anniversary, and with this acquisition, we will continue for at least another 25 years,” Bert concludes.
