EnergyVision acquires Belgian micro-hydropower pioneer Turbulent

post-title

Belgian renewable-energy company EnergyVision has acquired Turbulent, the Ghent-based developer of micro-hydropower technology.

The deal comes shortly after EnergyVision’s expansion in wind generation and marks a further step in broadening and stabilising the company’s renewable-energy mix. With solar, wind and now hydropower, EnergyVision aims to offer customers an increasingly diversified and reliable green-energy portfolio.

EnergyVision and Turbulent were both named Belgium’s Most Sustainable Companies at the 2023 Trends Global Impact Awards, but their connection goes back even further: Turbulent’s founders pitched their concept to EnergyVision’s CEO before their company officially launched. While EnergyVision focused on scaling its domestic solar and wind activities, Turbulent built an international footprint with its patented vortex micro-turbine technology.

Turbulent’s installations generate renewable electricity from low-head water flows without dams or heavy civil works, and are fully fish-friendly. Their ability to produce stable, around-the-clock baseload power is key to EnergyVision’s strategy to complement intermittent solar and wind output.

“Hydropower is the missing puzzle piece”, said EnergyVision CEO Maarten Michielssens. “With Turbulent, we add a stable, continuous source to our mix. They built a smart, scalable solution we will bring scale and speed to deploy it where it can have the greatest impact.”

Turbulent will continue developing projects worldwide and, together with EnergyVision, plans to build operational units in Belgium in the coming years. The brand will remain and operate as a separate business unit within the group.

After many adventures, we’re entering calmer waters with EnergyVision”, said Turbulent CEO Pieter Joseph, noting that the pipeline for 2026 already exceeds 5 million euros in signed projects. EnergyVision expects Turbulent to contribute positively to group results from day one and aims to turn the unit into a “profitable growth engine” within the group.
