Coultreon Biopharma, a rising star in immunology research, announced today the successful closure of a 125 million dollars Series A funding round, significantly exceeding its initial target.
The investment, led by Sofinnova Investments and joined by prominent backers such as Forbion, Novo Holdings, and Galapagos, will accelerate the development of the company’s groundbreaking therapies for autoimmune diseases.
At the heart of Coultreon’s innovation is its focus on salt-inducible kinases (SIKs), a family of proteins that play a crucial role in regulating inflammatory pathways.
The company’s lead candidate, COL-5671, is a highly selective, oral SIK3 inhibitor currently in Phase 1 trials.
With plans to advance into Phase 2 studies for psoriasis and ulcerative colitis, Coultreon aims to deliver a first-in-class therapy that could transform treatment options for patients struggling with chronic inflammation.
Pierre Raboisson, CEO of Coultreon, hailed the funding as a “major inflection point”, emphasizing the potential of COL-5671 to address unmet needs in autoimmune care. “We are committed to bringing novel, targeted therapies to patients who have limited options today”, he stated.
Investors echoed this optimism. Maha Katabi, General Partner at Sofinnova, praised Coultreon’s “scientific depth and disciplined strategy”, highlighting the promise of COL-5671 as an oral alternative to existing treatments.
Originally developed by Galapagos NV, COL-5671 has shown encouraging results in preclinical and early clinical studies, including sustained suppression of inflammatory cytokines and a favorable safety profile. The therapy’s unique mechanism – reducing pro-inflammatory signals while boosting regulatory cytokines – could offer broader and more durable disease control across conditions like Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and psoriatic arthritis.
With clinical proof-of-concept expected by 2027, Coultreon is poised to redefine the landscape of autoimmune disease treatment.
