Luceda Photonics, a Belgian pioneer in photonic chip design software, has been acquired by China’s Semitronix via its Singapore arm SMTX Technologies.
Luceda Photonics, a Belgian company specialising in software for designing photonic chips, has been acquired by SMTX Technologies, part of China’s Semitronix Group. Listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, Semitronix provides technology and services to boost semiconductor manufacturing efficiency.
Founded in 2014 as a spin-off from Ghent University and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Luceda focuses on photonic chips, which transmit information using light particles instead of electrons. This technology promises higher capacity and lower energy consumption.
The deal aims to accelerate the global commercialisation of its technology. The acquisition was subject to approval by Belgium’s federal screening committee due to the sector’s strategic nature; all necessary approvals have been granted. Financial terms were not disclosed. Shareholders selling their stakes include the Flemish investment company PMV and research institute Imec.
The transaction comes with a leadership change: CEO Erwin De Baetselier will step down, replaced by Pieter Dumon, while remaining on the board.
Luceda, based in Ghent with operations in Dendermonde, employs 45 people. It will retain its Belgian headquarters and management team while integrating into Semitronix’s international network.
