In a move set to reshape the Belgian wealth management landscape, Belfius Bank and Candriam have strengthened their nearly 30-year strategic alliance, with Belfius acquiring a 33 percent minority stake in Candriam.

The deal signals a deeper integration of investment expertise and ambitions between the two institutions, particularly in the growing domains of private assets and sustainable investing.

For M&A professionals watching the Belgian market, this transaction stands out not only for its scale but also for its strategic intent. By securing a significant stake, Belfius aims to accelerate its transformation into Belgium’s leading private bank, leveraging Candriam’s global investment platform to broaden its offer of tailor-made, high-quality investment solutions for retail and private clients.

This new equity tie cements a relationship that has long been collaborative and mutually reinforcing. Belfius clients will now benefit from even greater access to Candriam’s international capabilities, including private market investments – an area increasingly vital in portfolio diversification and alpha generation.

“This is more than a financial investment – it’s a cultural alignment and a strategic enabler”, says Dirk Gyselinck, Executive Director of Private, Wealth & Retail Banking at Belfius. “It positions us to deliver best-in-class, personalized solutions and deepen our footprint in the high-growth wealth segment.”

Candriam CEO Vincent Hamelink highlighted the benefits on his side as well, citing enhanced distribution potential and deeper alignment in innovation and ESG-focused strategies.

The transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals. No financial terms were disclosed.
