Belfius Group expands into Europe with acquisition of French insurtech Leocare

post-title

Belfius Group has taken its first concrete step beyond Belgium by acquiring Leocare SAS, a leading French digital insurtech, through its subsidiary Belfius Insurance.

The deal, signed today, marks the beginning of Belfius Insurance’s European expansion, starting with France – the continent’s second-largest insurance market, where digital distribution has yet to meet customer expectations.

A strategic entry into Europe
The acquisition aligns with Belfius Insurance’s strategy to scale its digital insurance expertise across Europe.

Leocare, founded in 2017 and based in Rennes, brings immediate access to the French market, including a robust distribution network, local expertise, an existing customer base, and a team of over 750 insurance brokers and B2B2C partners. Its highly rated app (4.8 on Trustpilot) and 1.3 million users underscore its strong digital presence.

Leocare will continue operating under its own brand, retaining its teams to ensure continuity. However, both companies will collaborate closely to leverage synergies in technology, data, and risk management, aiming to accelerate growth and innovation in digital insurance solutions.

Shared ambition for digital innovation
The partnership is built on the complementary strengths of Belfius Insurance and Leocare, who share a vision for digital-first insurance and customer-centric solutions. By combining Belfius’ technological and data-driven pricing capabilities with Leocare’s agile, customer-focused approach, the two aim to develop scalable, innovative insurance products tailored to modern consumer needs.

"Everything we’ve built in Belgium – our technology, data, and digital approach – is scalable. With Leocare, we’re taking a deliberate first step, driven by ambition and the expertise of our teams", said Frédéric Van der Schueren, CEO of Belfius Insurance.

Christophe Dandois, CEO of Leocare, added: "Joining Belfius Insurance allows us to reach a new dimension. With their support, we’ll accelerate our development and continue building the insurance of tomorrow: more innovative, smarter, and always close to our customers."

Next steps
The integration will officially begin on July 1, 2026, pending final internal approvals. Leocare and its parent company, Insurlytech, will then fully operate as part of Belfius Insurance.
